Throughout all of 2018, a lot has been said about the (relatively) paltry transaction throughput that the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain is currently able to facilitate; all whilst potential scalability solutions like sharding, Plasma, and state channels are teased out by Ethereum researchers and testers.

And so, when the co-founder of the Ethereum Foundation, Vitalik Buterin, last week revealed that he expects the Ethereum network to eventually be able to process one million transactions per second (TPS), and potentially in excess of one hundred million TPS, it is reason to feel somewhat optimistic. Indeed, the current TPS of Ethereum tends to oscillate between 7–15 TPS.

Blockchains will be powerful enough to handle most applications most people are trying to do with them.” – Buterin

Buterin’s TPS prediction formed part of an OmiseGO AMA video that can be found here (35:07). Of course, it’s OmiseGO (OMG) that will help determine the accuracy of the Ethereum creator’s ambitious forecast, for they are currently developing Plasma; a novel technique that allows for the creation of “child” blockchains that will attach to the “main” Ethereum blockchain.

More Recognition For Ethereum Creator

It’s easy to forget that the Russian-born programming extraordinaire is but 24 years old. One that hasn’t overseen this is the Nordic Business Report, who last week nominated Buterin as one of who they consider to be the “25 most promising, successful, and deservedly enviable people under the age of 25 in Northern Europe.”

Having already found his way into Fortune Magazine’s “40 under 40” list of the world’s most influential young people back in 2016, and then also being ranked fourth by Forbes Magazine in this year’s instalment of their “30 under 30” list of individuals influencing global money flows, it’s a pleasure to see the broader community continue to recognize Buterin and his ambitious goals.
