Crypterium Just Appointed the Ex-CEO of Visa UK as it’s New Chief

Crypterium, a cryptocurrency banking solution, has announced a very strong move: appointing the former CEO of Visa UK as it’s new Chief Executive Officer.

Marc O’Brien brings a lot of credibility with him to his new role, he spent six years as the head of Visa UK & Ireland, and in that time Visa increased its market share of debit card payments to a reported, and enormous, 97%. Their overall business revenue also doubled under O’Brien’s leadership.

Crypterium wants to be next to get the O’Brien bump. Most recently O’Brien has been acting as a key advisor in Revolut, a fellow FinTech consumer-level payment platform whose valuation is fast approaching US$2 billion.

I am delighted to be joining Crypterium at such an exciting time. I strongly believe that cryptocurrency is about to go mainstream and we can be pioneers to build Crypterium into a terrific business,” said O’Brien.

It is understood that the new CEO will be spearheading the release of the Crypterium App, which promises to bring cash-like convenience to the cryptocurrency user. A main drawcard of the platform will be virtual cards that can be linked to Apple or Android Pay, bound to cryptocurrency wallets and able to be used with any NFC terminal.

eToro Ready for US Cryptocurrency Market, Initially Offers 10 Cryptocurrencies

A press release yesterday announced that the eToro investment platform will finally be offering cryptocurrencies in the United States.

Over the past decade the eToro investment platform has grown to accommodate over ten million registered users in over 140 countries. The addition of U.S-based investors, worth a sizeable percentage of the global cryptocurrency market, is the next obvious step in order to compete with other major cryptocurrency exchanges based outside the jurisdiction of the SEC.

There is a waiting list though, and initial users will be offered just ten cryptocurrencies, but the company pledges to integrate ‘several more’ cryptocurrencies throughout the rest of the year.

CEO and co-founder of eToro, Yoni Assia, said this of the expansion:

Consumers all over the world should have access to the tools they need to participate in cryptocurrency markets, regardless of their expertise. We’re excited to make our platform available to U.S. users, who have shown a strong enthusiasm for participating in these growing markets. Within the platform, our U.S. users will find rich knowledge and insights into how to effectively trade and invest in cryptocurrencies.”

The initial cryptocurrencies offered will be: Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), Dash (DASH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Stellar Lumens (XLM), NEO (NEO), Ethereum Classic (ETC) and EOS (EOS).

The full eToro platform enables users to copy the trades of other investors, manually invest, and it even provides opportunities for automatically investing in a diversified portfolio.

New HTC Smartphone is Built for the Blockchain, Every Phone to be a Node

Global smartphone giant HTC has revealed its latest smartphone: the Exodus.

Pitched perfectly towards the cryptocurrency user, it is touted to be focused on decentralized, open-source apps and has strong visions on allowing each phone to be its own node, a la internet-of-things style projects such as IOTA.

In fact, the ‘its own node’ angle has been pushed by their marketing team: they have openly declared their intention to have twice the nodes that Ethereum has and triple that of Bitcoin’s.

Being successful would make the new HTC Exodus blockchain network the largest in the sector.

While being marketed as a means to ‘take control of your data’ it is still unclear whether it will support popular traditional and centralised apps as well as dApps.

With details being so sparse, there’s a strong chance that it purely exists as a blueprint at this stage. It has been confirmed already, though, that it will be an Android-based device and will come complete with support for Bitcoin and Ethereum ecosystems and networks such as Lightning and Dfinity.

Smartphones geared for cryptocurrencies aren’t exactly new, but previously there has been a heavy focus on security rather than usability and general use of dApps, let alone capable of becoming the largest blockchain network in existence.

The introduction of a flagship smartphone focused on all things decentralized, by a company such as HTC – who in 2016 posted revenue in excess of US$130 billion – could signal we about to experience an increased rate of adoption across the market.

Coinbase Targets Institutional Investors, Rolls Out New Platform Suite

Coinbase has today revealed its new suite of cryptocurrency platforms targeting institutional investors. The announcement comes hand in hand with the inception of a brand new headquarters in New York City in charge of maintaining relations with Wall Street and support to new institutional investors.

Coinbase Custody

Coinbase Custody provides storage utility for large amounts of digital assets and is seen as a means of partnering with an unnamed SEC-regulated broker-dealer. Coinbase are boasting six investment capital firms as partners at launch, including BoostVC, Autonomous Partners and Polychain Capital. This could also be seen as Coinbase flexing their security muscle in wake of international cyber-attacks targeting cryptocurrency exchanges.

Coinbase Markets

Having the ability to obtain and store large assets naturally leads to wanting to trade them, and while Coinbase itself hosts an impressively deep liquidity pool, the new institutional version wants to build on that success.

It appears that it will be a premium-access exchange with a set of operational upgrades with direct settlement and clearing services connected to Coinbase Custody. The additional features, such as ‘on-premise datacenter colocation’ with ‘low latency performance’ have a stated intention of providing “a more efficient price discovery process to occur, creating tighter markets, deeper liquidity, and increased certainty of execution.” Great news for whales!

Coinbase Prime

Coinbase Prime is the key to interfacing with Coinbase Custody and Coinbase Markets, and while for now it appears to be a fancy GUI, it is worth noting that Coinbase plans on adding lending/margin trading as well as over-the-counter (OTC) trades completely built in.

In regards to the Coinbase Institutional Coverage Group, the new headquarters in New York City, they will be tasked with onboarding and guiding interested parties through their expansion into the cryptocurrency markets.

The official blog post reads:

We understand that institutions need more than great products, they need great service too. Our Institutional Coverage group is focused exclusively on serving the needs of institutional clients by providing sales, sales trading, research, market operations, and client services support. This group, headquartered in our New York City office, brings years of diverse and relevant institutional experience from firms such as the New York Stock Exchange, Morgan Stanley, and the SEC and CFTC.”

NEO & Ontology (ONT) Form Powerhouse Partnership, MoU Signed

A Medium post today announced a deal struck between two Chinese heavyweight blockchains. Ontology & NEO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The Memorandum concerns strategic and technological integration between the two foundations.

Ontology is a distributed trust network with focus on digital identity, data exchange and other trust management services.

Partnering with NEO, Ontology will provide global developers with compliance-ready, regulatable protocols. These protocols will be further supported by Neo Virtual Machine (NeoVM) functionality, allowing for the migration of NEO dApps onto the Ontology network.

Outlined in the MoU is development of a shared smart contract ecosystem through mutual support of NeoVM and NeoContract.

Both foundations will be working closely on data integration for APIs and SDKs as well as cross-chain research focused on delivering integrable mainnets.

Ontology and NEO have pledged to set up a joint taskforce in order to deal with the points highlighted by the MOU.

The agreement also sees both sides dedicating funds to relevant research institutions in order to boost progress of academic research into blockchain technology.

Such co-ordinated development puts any dApp developed on either blockchain on track for being compliant with any strict local regulations.

Gemini Exchange Adds New Wave of Cryptocurrencies: Litecoin, ZCash & Bitcoin Cash

The cryptocurrency exchange led by the infamous Winklevoss Twins, Gemini, is adding support for three new cryptocurrencies.

The new wave of supported coins will be made up of privacy-focused ZCash, controversial Bitcoin fork, Bitcoin Cash and community favourite Litecoin.

Addition to the exchange is big news considering that Gemini is completely licensed across the United States and has been attracting institutional investors from prominent markets all around the world, including Hong Kong, South Korea and the U.K.

Particular attention has been cast on the addition of ZCash, with Cameron Winklevoss declaring:

Our approval makes Gemini the first licensed Zcash exchange in the world. It also makes the NYSDFS the first regulatory agency in the world to supervise Zcash.”

The open-armed welcoming by Gemini of a cryptocurrency designed for anonymity is refreshing considering Japan’s recent calls to ban exchanges from listing privacy-focused coins.

Any market reaction also be an interesting marker for institutional interest in digital assets with in-built privacy functionality.

Gemini is looking to begin accepting deposits of ZCash this Saturday, while specific dates for the enabling of trade in Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash are yet to be released.

OmiseGo (OMG) Preparing for Japanese Regulations, Seeks New Compliance Officer in Tokyo Office

OmiseGo, the Ethereum centric open payment platform and decentralized digital asset exchange, has advertised an opening for a Compliance Officer to start work as soon as possible at their Tokyo office.

The advertisement could indicate that OmiseGo (OMG) is prepared to do whatever it takes to be completely regulated across the entire Asian market moving forward.

Responsibilities of the job would be managing fund settlement law, developing countermeasures for security incidents as well as managing internal security education programs.

In order to get to the interview stage, all candidates must have legal business experience at a financial institution or other industry related compliance experience, 10 years of practice, experience working for ministries or agencies and, of course, proficient Japanese language on top of a working business level of English.

This move has likely been caused by tougher regulations imposed by the Japanese Financial Services Agency. Such regulations came to a head last week when two cryptocurrency exchanges in the country were forced to cease operations due to regulatory failings.

TRON (TRX) on Target for MainNet Launch, TronVM First Release Available May 25

Prominent alt-coin Tron (TRX) is ramping up the good news ahead of its scheduled MainNet launch on June 25.

A tweet from the TRON Foundation reveals that the first version of their Tron Virtual Machine (TronVM) will be ready for release on May 25, about a month prior to the MainNet launch.

The announcement of the release of TronVM v.0.1 being a full month before the MainNet could be seen as a smooth marketing play targeted at prospective developers for the Ethereum blockchain – a major competitor.

TronVM will give developers the opportunity to use an adaptor to ‘migrate seamlessly from Ethereum dApp projects to TRON’, and will even be accompanied by a rewards program for those that make the switch.

Details of Tron’s MainNet, ‘Odyssey’ were revealed in a Medium post that doubled as a heartfelt letter to investors from CEO and Founder Justin Sun.

Heavy, focused testing will be conducted on Odyssey for three weeks, June 1 – 24. The genesis block (the first block to be mined on the new blockchain) will happen on June 25 and all Super Representatives will be elected the day after.

Since TRON is Java-based and provides a developer-friendly environment, the industry will be able to break away from Ethereum and its low-efficiency, congestion-prone network, high fees, and a steep learning curve. We will open the doors to a new cryptocurrency stage focused on scaling and commercialization, providing next generation infrastructure and express lanes needed for global dApp development.’ the letter reads.

TRON’s market cap has slowly been growing in anticipation, growing from around US$2.6 billion to US4.5 billion in the last month.

Huawei to Implement Bitcoin Wallet by Default in All New Devices, Making Crypto More Accessible to Entire Market

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has announced that future models will include an integrated Bitcoin wallet.

In an official release the company has revealed that it will partner with BTC.com for the inclusion of Bitcoin wallet to its AppGallery. The AppGallery itself will be installed by default on all new devices including Huawei and Honor phones.

The move is set to give a significant advantage to Huawei in their home market of China.

China has been a focal point of the entire crypto-market over the past few years.

Huawei’s decision to provide crypto-support completely by default may suggest that the use of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general is likely to increase in the upcoming months.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the BTC.com vice president has commented that:

The use of cashless payments with apps is very big and the traditional banking system is lacking, so there’s a good use case for crypto payments to grow there.”

Huawei, founded in 1987, enjoys almost a 25% share in the entire share of the IT networks market in China.
